MED20

This meditation cabin in New Zealand is a small building devoted to silence. It sits lightly in a clearing in the forest, raised above the ground on a timber structure so that the terrain, the grass and the roots can continue beneath it. A long veranda wraps the space and forms a threshold between the open landscape and the protected interior.

The roof, clad in shingles of weathered metal, folds low over the glazed walls and gives the cabin a sheltering, almost vernacular silhouette. Inside, a fire pit marks the centre, and the space is lined in timber, with views into the trees in all directions. An axonometric drawing reveals a simple, repetitive frame of posts and beams, designed for simple construction. The architecture is reduced to what is essential: shelter, warmth, light and a connection to nature.
